Learn how to fix the "There Was a Problem With the Update" error on Xbox during system updates.

I was updating my friend’s OG Xbox One the other day and figured it would be a routine task. I plugged in the console, skipped logging in to an account to speed things up, and started the update before heading upstairs to finish some dishes. When I came back to check on progress about 10 minutes later, there was an unfamiliar error sitting on the screen: “There was a Problem with the Update”.

Oh boy. Here we go again.

There was additional information on the screen telling me “You need this update to use your console, but that something went wrong”.

No. Way. I always love Microsoft’s errors and how descriptive they are…

Knowing how to tackle this, I started going through my Xbox Troubleshooting Checklist. Sure enough, after fiddling with a few settings and my network, I got the Xbox to finish updating.

But it wasn’t as easy as I had hoped. Let’s walk through how to fix problems with updating your Xbox One, Xbox One X, or Xbox Series S|X console…even if it’s not the error that I’m talking about here.

Why Your Xbox Won’t Update

There’s a good chance you’re like me and running into this issue after your console or older Xbox One has sat unused for some time.

When hardware is out of date and stays out of date, it runs the issue of not being able to upgrade to the newest version of the operating system or firmware due to problems with finding the latest or correct Xbox OS version.

This happens frequently in enterprise software settings where companies stay on a version for years and years due to the cost and time of upgrading. Sometimes, they’re so far behind the system needs a special upgrade path because it can’t be upgraded to the latest version directly.

Another reason your Xbox might not be updating is because of a corrupt update file that occurred during download or installation. There are many reasons this can happen, including a poor or interrupted internet connection that causes the file to be corrupt or unreadable to the console.

The good news is, regardless of the reason your Xbox won’t update, there’s a good chance you can get it working again following a few simple steps.

Check Your Internet Connection

Before we get in to the solution to solving this issue with your console not updating, the best thing to do is verify that your internet connection is solid and not running in to any issues.

Games have the ability to deal with lag and slow internet speeds but there isn’t telling me the Xbox OS updater handles it gracefully. There’s a possibility that while your console is downloading or installing the update, the internet connection cuts out which can result in an impartial or corrupt system update file.

If you’re on wireless, hardwire the Xbox to your router or modem. That way you’re guaranteed a faster and more stable connection that won’t drop due to interference.

I recommend hardwiring every device possible. It helps reduce the load on your wireless router and guarantees better speeds for gaming and entertainment through your Xbox.

Last but not least if you’ve tried the steps above and you’re still having slow download speeds or the system update download isn’t working, it’s always worth shutting down idle electronics and smart devices that connect to the internet. Unless you have a fiber connection and the hardware to handle it, any extra bandwidth can help push higher download speeds to your Xbox for the update.

Power Cycle Your Console

If you’ve verified your internet connection is stable and not causing issues, the next thing to do is perform a hard reset and/or clear the cache on your Xbox console.

People are typically confused about the difference between a hard reset, factory reset, power cycle, and clearing the cache on your Xbox console. While one clears temporary storage and helps speed up your Xbox or solve certain issues, the other will completely reset your Xbox settings, locally stored games, and anything else that’s on your Xbox – and it’s permanent.

To help, I wrote an article about Performing a Hard Reset or clearing the Cache on Your Xbox Console. There are a few different ways to do this, but they all solve the same issues.

Realistically speaking, this is the one tried and true method for fixing most of those inconvenient Xbox console problems. So if you haven’t, you should take 60 seconds out of your day to try it. That way you know how to perform the hard reset/cache clear again in the future.

Again, if you have internet issues, a hard reset/clearing the cache on your Xbox isn’t going to fix the problem, but it’s worth trying for almost any Common Xbox One Problem.

My Xbox Still Won’t Update

Finally, the update is almost done!

Unfortunately, there’s always the possibility of your Xbox not updating after following the troubleshooting steps listed above. While this situation is rare, it can happen.

Microsoft has actually done a decent job of covering all of these scenarios on their website. It’s just…hard to navigate. Which is why we created this to avoid the hassle of having to look through 100 different accordion menus on Xbox.com. But it’s there, and they cover it
