Have you ever run into the problem where your Xbox One beeps but it won’t turn on? This is a common problem with the Xbox One and Xbox One S, but it can be fixed following a few simple steps.

Unfortunately, the more complex our gaming consoles get, the more things that can go wrong. Have you ever run into the problem where your Xbox One beeps but won’t turn on? This is a common problem with the Xbox One, but it can be fixed following a few simple steps.

Why does my Xbox One beep, but not turn on?

There are typically 2 scenarios where your Xbox One or Xbox One S will beep after pressing the power button, but not turn on:

  • You press the power button, it beeps, but won’t turn on. After hitting the button a second time, the console will turn on.
  • When you press the power button on your Xbox One, it won’t turn on. After hitting it a second time, the Xbox still does not turn on.

The first scenario is fairly common and could be due to the power state your Xbox One is in.

The second scenario is much more serious and could require repairs, new cables, or replacing your Xbox One.

Let’s walk through a few different ways you can fix the issue of your Xbox One beeping, but not turning on.

Option #1: Power Cycle Your Xbox

This is the most obvious (and easiest) solution for fixing your Xbox One when it beeps but doesn’t turn on.

When you ‘shut off’ your Xbox, it doesn’t actually shut off but moves into a ‘low power’ state that allows it to apply updates and other important changes in the background while you’re not using it. Power cycling your Xbox console (also referred to as a ‘Hard Reset’) allows it to completely restart, including the software which, in a tale as old as time, typically resolves a whole host of minor nuances.

How to Power Cycle (Or Hard Reset) Your Xbox One

Location of Xbox controller home button and Xbox console power button to perform hard reset.
  • With the Xbox One powered off, hold your power button down for 10 seconds.
  • You’ll hear the console power off, and the power brick will turn orange briefly, white for another second, and then back to orange.

This means that your console has finished resetting and is now in a standby state.

If your Xbox One beeps but still doesn’t turn on, try pressing the button one more time.

This fix also works for many other common Xbox One problems such as:

Next, we’ll take a look at some other methods that are a little bit more unorthodox but have worked for others experiencing the issue of their Xbox One beeping but not turning on.

Option #2: Tap the Eject Button Repeatedly

How to tap the Xbox power button repeatedly to fix an issue with the xbox

This might sound crazy, but a few people over at the Xbox forums have said they fixed their Xbox One beeping but not turning on by repeatedly hitting the eject button on the front of the Xbox One console.

While it does seem pretty insane, it seems like this fix has worked for a few different people, regardless of if you have a disc in the console or not.

One forum-goer also pointed out that they were holding down the middle button on the Xbox One Controller AND tapping the eject button before his Xbox One console turned on.

If you manage to fix your Xbox by performing this ridiculous feat, please let us know in the comments below – we would love to hear about it!

Option #3: Check Your Power Cable and Power Brick

Xbox One Power Brick

There’s always the possibility that your Xbox One power supply is shot or on the brink of failing.

Any frays, bent wires, or damaged plastic casing on the power brick can be an indicator your power supply is damaged, and the reason why your Xbox One is not turning on.

Luckily, a new power brick is pretty cheap, and it’s a lot cheaper than replacing or upgrading your Xbox One.

Side Note: The New Xbox One X and Xbox One Series X have a single power cord (and no brick)

Option #4: Unplug Your Xbox for 10 Seconds

If you’ve exhausted all other options, you can unplug your Xbox One power supply from the outlet and the Xbox One for 10 seconds to see if it resolves the issue of when your Xbox One beeps but doesn’t turn on.

This is an internal power reset, and different than power cycling your Xbox One.
